5000 dating adults were asked how they communicated romantic interest and five different flirting styles were identified: Polite, Sincere, Playful, Physical and Traditional.
Authors Jeffrey Hall and Steve Carter created an excellent book The Five Flirting Styles, that decodes each style.
Knowing something about the way you communicate attraction says something about challenges you might have had in your past dating life,” Hall continued. “Hopefully, this awareness can help people avoid those mistakes and succeed in courtship.
Flirting happens at the beginning of romantic relationships. Different styles of flirting are associated with different dating and relationship outcomes. If you’re not happy with your romantic life, perhaps there’s a disconnect between the way you communicate – your flirting style – and what you really want.

Polite Flirting Style
Polite flirters prefer quiet, intimate settings to large social scenes. They believe in using proper manners when flirting and not using overt sexual communication. They tend to be more introverted and won’t pursue, preferring to wait for the object of their attraction to make the first move. Because of their passive stance and beliefs, polite flirts find it hard to meet women and attract their attention.
Sincere Flirting Style
The main focus of sincere flirting to to create an emotional connection and communicate a genuine interest. People with this style tend to have relationships that involve strong emotional connection, and sexual chemistry, and which also tend to be meaningful.
Playful Flirting Style
This style involves approaching flirting as fun and is done in the service to increases one’s self esteem. Typically the playful person will often flirt with little interest in finding a long-term relationship. This style has been associated with less important or meaningful relationships. People with a Playful flirting style seem to enjoy the game, flirting for fun. But don’t let that discourage you – playful flirters want love too!
